A family group look happy after the Try Dive and Discover Scuba Diving session

How to Get Started in Scuba Diving: A Beginner’s Guide

Scuba diving might feel like something out of reach or reserved for the seasoned traveller, but the reality is much simpler: anyone can learn.

There are plenty of ways to get started, with thousands of PADI-linked dive centres around the world meaning the opportunity to begin will probably not be that far away.

But, while it might seem easier to get a first feel for diving in your home country, there is nothing quite like doing it as part of your holiday.

With the perfect facilities close to hand, it gives you plenty of time to find your feet with experienced tutors while also exploring some amazing waters and seeing some incredible sights.

To make it even easier, we are providing some discounted rates for under-16s this summer so there is a great chance to get started as a family. Find out more later on.

In the meantime, how do you go about getting started…

Start with a ‘Try Dive’ Experience

If you’re completely new, a great place to begin is with a taster session like a Discover Scuba Diving experience. This is typically a one-day introduction where you learn basic skills in shallow water. It’s designed to give you a feel for breathing underwater and experiencing that unique sense of weightlessness.

All our Emperor dive centres provide these sessions. They are an ideal way for beginners to get a feel for things.

Take Your First Certification

Once you’re hooked (and most people are), the next step is to get qualified.

PADI Scuba Diver Course

This two-day (plus self-study) course is a fantastic way to begin, allowing you to dive with a professional guide down to 12 metres. What’s more, it represents about 50% of the Open Water course, so if you decide you want to continue to complete the Open Water training at another time, you’re nearly halfway there!

PADI Open Water Diver Course

The world’s leading scuba certification. It allows you to dive independently with a dive buddy to 18 metres and takes three days to complete. Consisting of three steps – self-study of around eight hours, pool or shallow water skill development and four open water dives – within just a few days you will have a qualification that opens the door to a lifetime of adventures.

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course

This is your ticket to dive deeper and have a lot of fun along the way! By gaining experience in five different types (a deep dive and navigation dive are mandatory but you can choose the other three) you’ll be able to dive to 30 metres, and get the card to prove it! It is possible – and often done – that those who do their Open Water go on to take their Advanced on the same trip.

Learning to dive is all about environment, and this is where Emperor’s locations really shine.

All our centres are PADI 5-Star facilities with experienced instructors who know exactly how to tailor the courses to meet the needs and approach of every guest.

In Egypt, the Red Sea offers warm water, excellent visibility, and calm conditions – perfect for building confidence.

Indonesia, particularly around Nusa Lembongan, offers something slightly different: vibrant reefs in the heart of the Coral Triangle. Here, you’ll combine your training with some of the richest marine biodiversity on the planet.

Starting scuba diving isn’t about being fearless – it’s about being curious. With professional instructors, structured courses, and world-class locations in Egypt and Indonesia, Emperor Divers make that first step simple, safe and unforgettable.

And now for the good part. This summer we are giving you the chance to elevate your holiday to the next level with some special course offers for your children.

At our dive centres in Egypt (Port Ghalib, Sharm el Sheikh and Wadi Sabarah) and Indonesia (Nusa Lembongan), we’re offering 15% off PADI courses for 10-16 year olds, giving younger divers the chance to take their first steps with a recognised PADI scuba diving qualification.

But the adults don’t miss out. We’re offering 10% off our daily diving rates so that parents and guardians can also get a reduction to ensure a fantastic family day out.

All you need to do is take a breath – and dive in.
