Emperor working with Cousteau to monitor marine life

Protecting marine life is something everyone at Emperor Divers is extremely passionate about.

We know how important it is to preserve and conserve our underwater world for future generations and recognise the vital importance of sustaining the ocean’s biodiversity and health.

Added to which, the lives of our staff and the enjoyment of our guests are intrinsically linked to the water and its inhabitants.

That is why we are delighted to assist with the excellent work done by Cousteau Divers.

Cousteau Divers is a French non-profit organization founded in 2009 by Pierre-Yves Cousteau, son of famous ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

Their focus is on citizen-science, raising awareness, and the conservation of marine life worldwide.

By measuring water temperatures and taking photographs to identify sightings of underwater biodiversity and human impacts on the natural environment, they aim to monitor the seas to obtain scientifically significant information.

As they say: “As passionate divers we are all witnesses of the degradation of the natural environment caused by human activities. Cousteau Divers’ vision is to empower this community to act in meaningful ways to help monitor and protect marine life. We love the Ocean, we want to protect it, we need to know it.”

For Emperor’s part, we have one of Cousteau Divers’ sensors onboard our Maldives liveaboard Emperor Leo. Boat manager Jules Latrille carries the sensor – the Rémora – on each dive so we can now provide them with regular uploaded data from the Indian Ocean.

Emperor Maldives general manager Bernie McAteer says: “Emperor Divers is committed to supporting environmental studies and collaborating with experts such as Cousteau Divers.

“We recognize the importance of understanding the impact of human activities on the ocean. By actively promoting and participating these studies, we aim help to raise awareness, inspire change, and make a positive difference.”
