Emperor Divers was delighted to join in the work to mark the 17th World Ocean Day on June 8th.
As part of our ongoing commitment to protecting our precious waters, guests and staff from our Port Ghalib dive centre did a clean-up day this weekend from Emperor Skye.
World Ocean Day, celebrated annually on June 8th, is a global event designed to raise awareness about the vital role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth.
The day aims to highlight the importance of protecting our oceans and their ecosystems, which cover over 70% of the planet’s surface and are crucial for biodiversity, climate regulation, and human livelihoods.
The origins of World Ocean Day trace back to the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where it was proposed as a way to honour the ocean’s contributions and to foster global cooperation in addressing marine issues.
Officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008, the day now engages millions of people worldwide through various activities, events, and initiatives and seeks to achieve several key goals.
Primarily, it aims to educate the public about the critical importance of oceans and the challenges they face, such as pollution, overfishing, and climate change.
It also promotes sustainable practices, encouraging individuals, communities, and governments to take action in preserving marine environments as well as fostering collaboration to develop and implement solutions for healthier oceans.
We are very pleased to have joined in the World Ocean Day campaign and look forward to doing further work to ensure our seas remain as healthy as possible.
