Dolphins

‘Self-aware’ dolphins are both cute and clever

Everybody loves them! Dolphins, with their playful lifestyle and ‘smiling’ faces, have long captured the hearts and minds of people the world over.

Beyond their graceful appearances and acrobatic displays, dolphins are remarkable for their intelligence and self-awareness.

One of the most striking features of bottlenose dolphins is their exceptionally large and complex brain. And, while brain size alone is not indicative of intelligence, it does provide a strong foundation for advanced cognitive abilities.

They have a well-developed neocortex, the part of the brain responsible for higher-order functions like problem-solving, memory, and complex thought processes. This suggests they have the neural capacity for advanced cognitive tasks.

They are also famous for their use of echolocation, a sophisticated sensory adaptation that enables them to navigate and locate prey in their underwater environment. Echolocation involves emitting a series of clicks and listening to the echoes bouncing back, allowing dolphins to create detailed mental maps of their surroundings.

They also possess hugely impressive communication skills. They have a wide range of vocalisations, including clicks, whistles, and body postures, which they use to convey complex messages and researchers have identified signature whistles, unique to each individual, which may function as a name or identifier within their social groups.

This is important as bottlenose dolphins are highly social creatures, living in intricate and dynamic social networks. They form tight-knit pods or groups that can vary in size and composition. These social bonds are not only essential for their survival but also contribute to their cognitive development.

In these social groups, dolphins engage in cooperative hunting, share food, and exhibit a variety of behaviours that require advanced problem-solving and coordination. The ability to work together in such complex ways demonstrates their high level of intelligence.

That intelligence also manifests itself in their playful nature. Often seen riding waves, surfing in the wake of boats, and playing with objects found in their environment, this playfulness is not just for amusement; it also serves as a form of cognitive stimulation.

Furthermore, some populations of bottlenose dolphins have been observed using tools. For example, dolphins in Shark Bay, Australia, use sponges to protect their rostrums (snouts) while foraging on the seafloor – real evidence of their ability to innovate and adapt to their environment.

Perhaps the most compelling evidence for the self-awareness of bottlenose dolphins, however, comes from mirror self-recognition tests. In these experiments, a mark is placed on the dolphin’s body in a location that can only be seen in a mirror. If the dolphin recognizes itself in the mirror, it will attempt to investigate or remove the mark, indicating an understanding of self.

Several studies have demonstrated they can pass these mirror self-recognition tests, suggesting a level of self-awareness similar to that seen in great apes, elephants, and humans.

So, not just a happy face with a playful approach to life; bottlenose dolphins are incredibly intelligent and self-aware creatures with sophisticated communication, social complexity and remarkable cognitive abilities.
