When is it best to dive the Red Sea – your seasonal guide

What is the best time to dive in Red Sea?

Well, right now obviously! I mean, whatever else you are doing at the moment wouldn’t you rather be exploring those crystal-clear waters or chilling out in that African sunshine?

However, while you would undoubtedly want (and we would certainly recommend) to be jumping on the first available plane and coming to join us, that might not be possible.

So, to answer the question more sensibly, any time is a good time. That is the great thing about diving in this part of the world.

Whatever the season, the Red Sea will provide you with something special as it is a year-round paradise for divers.

Starting right now, here are some reasons why it is always the right time to dive the Red Sea.

Spring (March to May)

This is the season when water temperatures start to warm up, making it comfortable for longer dives. Visibility is great, often exceeding 30 metres, allowing divers to fully appreciate the coral gardens and the bustling aquatic life. It’s also an excellent time for those interested in marine biology, as many species exhibit fascinating breeding behaviours.

Elise Watling, one of our much-loved guides in Sharm el Sheikh, says: “Spring is great. You start to notice an increase in the fish numbers and it’s a really happy time because you know summer is on its way.”

Summer (June to August)

Summer diving in the Red Sea is for those who love warm waters, with temperatures reaching up to 30°C (86°F). This is the perfect time for night diving, a magical experience where nocturnal creatures come to life, and the underwater world feels entirely different. Bioluminescence can create a starry effect while some of the Red Sea’s famous night dwellers, such as nocturnal nudibranchs and flatworms, display their vivid colours and patterns against the dark backdrop.

Dive guide Sayed Elwardany enjoys this time of year for “the very hot weather but also there are many large fish – and the water is warm”.

Autumn (September to November)

Many think this is the best time to visit as the heat of the summer dissipates, autumn brings cooler temperatures and a return of more varied marine life. Divers can enjoy long, comfortable dives exploring the wrecks and reefs without the summer crowds. The water retains much of its warmth from the summer, making it pleasant for those who prefer milder conditions. This season is particularly good for photography, as the changing light conditions create stunning visual effects underwater.

Sharm el Sheik guide Ahmed Othman – or ‘Ozzy’ as everyone knows him – believes this is the ideal time because “the air temperature and water temperature are the best combination”.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is the hidden gem of Red Sea diving. The cooler water temperatures (still a comfortable 22°C or 71.6°F) attract different species, including manta rays and dolphins, offering a unique experience compared to other seasons. The visibility remains excellent, and the lower humidity levels ensure crisp, clear skies above. Winter also sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more serene diving experience. It’s the ideal time for those looking to escape the colder climates of the north and enjoy some winter sun alongside their diving adventures.

Emperor’s Port Ghalib manager Saad Badawy says: “This is when it is the coldest but you get more flat days and some really amazing sunsets.”
