5 Indonesia festivals you must see

The summer months are a great time to come diving in Indonesia with the temperatures good and the visibility excellent.

But the summer is also a time of celebration in this stunning country with many festivals and events taking place. Joining in, or merely being a bystander, at these can give you an amazing cultural experience and a better understanding of Indonesia’s heritage.

And if you make the time to add occasions such as these to your diving holiday, it will provide you with yet another lifelong memory to take home.

So, if you are joining us in June, July or August, here are five festivals we recommend looking out for.

1 Bali Arts Festival (Pesta Kesenian Bali)

Taking place from the middle of June to the middle of July in Denpasar, Bali, this month-long festival showcases the island’s rich culture. From traditional dances and musical concerts, to art exhibitions, food festivals and carnivals; there are so many different ways and opportunities for visitors to experience Balinese culture firsthand.

2 Jakarta Fair (Pekan Raya Jakarta)

Coinciding with Jakarta’s anniversary in June (the month in 1527 when the Portuguese were driven out of Sunda Kelapa which was then renamed Jayakarta), this fair is one of the biggest in Indonesia, offering entertainment, culinary delights, and a showcase of products from all over the country. It’s an event that is a celebration for the locals and a chance for visitors to see Indonesia’s diverse cultures and products in one place – the Jakarta International Expo. If you’re entering the country through Jakarta on your way to join us, it is well worth factoring in a visit to this amazing spectacle.

3 Raja Ampat Maritime Festival

We love Raja Ampat! And this stunning archipelago hosts a festival in August which celebrates the marine biodiversity of the region with traditional dances, music, and boat races. It’s perfect for anyone interested in marine conservation and indigenous cultures and is a wonderful addition to your holiday before or after joining Emperor Harmoni.

4 Independence Day Celebrations

On August 17th, the entire country celebrates Indonesia’s Independence Day with parades, games and ceremonies. It’s a time of great national pride and communities across the country will come together to take part in traditional activities to display their patriotic spirit and Indonesian heritage.

5 Bali Kite Festival

Slightly different to the others but a real spectacle, the Bali Kite Festival is held in July at Padanggalak Beach. It features enormous traditional kites flown in competition by large teams (of up to 70 or 80 people) from local villages who bring their own bands and banners with them. Held to thank the Hindu gods for the abundant crops they create, it’s a colourful and photogenic event that will bring huge joy to any spectator.
