New PADI TecRec Trimix Distinctive Specialty course now available from Tekstreme
Tekstreme are proud to announce the launch of the newest PADI Trimix Distinctive Specialty courses; TMX 45 and TMX 50.
PADI Technical Consultants have written a TecRec Distinctive Specialty to introduce the use of trimix when diving shallower than 50m/165 feet. The primary reason for using trimix at these depths is to reduce narcosis.
Whilst many divers are happy to dive on EANx or air to 50m/165 feet, others are not. In challenging diving conditions reducing narcosis can be desirable to almost all divers.
Joran Buwalda - Junior Master Scuba Diver at 13 years old!
Recently, 13 year old Joran Buwalda from the Netherlands qualified as Junior Master Scuba Diver with Emperor Divers Hurghada.
Two years ago Joran, with his father Mattijn as buddy, did his Open Water Course in Cairns Australia and got hooked on diving. Joran was then lucky enough to receive Advanced Open Water training from Mohammed Hashem at Emperor Hurghada who has a gift for teaching junior divers.
His patience and educational skills are highly valued. All the subsequent courses and specialties were also done at Emperor Divers Hurghada.
At the time of writing, Joran has logged 90 dives.
I'm Joran, and I'm thirteen years old. I'm from a small village in the Netherlands. There I live with my parents.
I started diving in 2009, in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. I went there five weeks with my father. We did the open water together, and we immediately enjoyed diving! At first the doctor wanted to keep me from diving, because I was too small, and I might not be able to carry all the weight of the equipment. Fortunately, he agreed to let me try first, and it went very well!
After our holiday in Australia we of course decided to go on in diving, so we went to Emperor Divers in Hurghada. There we both did the advanced course and we enjoyed it even more! The people at Emperor are very kind and we knew that we would come back! After this holiday in Hurghada, I came back two more times at Emperor. My dad even went back another time on his own.
I have now made 90 dives, I'm rescue diver (also trained at Emperor) and I have five specialties. This means I'm a Junior Master Scuba diver!
All my courses, except the open water in Australia, I did in Hurghada. And I have to say I really enjoyed them! Especially with the kind instructor who I see every time I come back.
I use a ten liter tank and I have nearly all my equipment now. Only my wetsuit and boots I don't have myself. I would need a new one every holiday, I'm just growing too fast! Fortunately I can always hire them at the Emperor resort.
I really like diving and I hope that one day I can be able to help the Emperor instructors in their courses, or even be an instructor myself...
In our next newsletter, we'll be bringing you an insight into Mohammed Hashem and his life as an Emperor instructor.
Derek Oldham, 81 years old, shares his Red Sea memoirs
Derek Oldham from Melton Divers, seasoned diver of 81 years of age, relives his diving memories...
Foreword from Derek (pic below on the lighthouse at Big Brother):
"The year is 1986 and following the launch of our Vauxhall Dealership I find myself aboard Wind Spirit on a promotional trip. Introduced to diving; attempt to satisfy the disciplines; fail dismally; successful entrants enjoy a dive to the depths while I look on.
A few years later, having dismissed diving as not for me and getting qualified as a light aircraft pilot instead, I am persuaded by my Service Manager and dear friend, Mick Knight (now in Australia), to join Melton Divers. I meet Janice Humm who amazingly within thirty minutes has me 'swimming underwater'.
Now I am enthusiastic and after more pool practice join her for my first dive at Stoney Cove. The date is 7 May 2005. Over the next six years I enjoy the friendly help one gets from divers from all walks of life: Melton Divers, Emperor Divers, with a special word of absolute thanks to Donna Bowen, a young lady who took this old guy to the depths on many occasions with skill and disipline that would be difficult to improve upon.
Within this newsletter, over the next few months, I will endeavour to recount in real time the memories of those years, impossible without the dedication of the Emperor Divers staff. I will take my detailed log as the basic guide but you must excuse me if I have mistaken names, although looking back it appears that Donna and Janice with Terry had insisted on detail! I will refer to my self as DJ for simplicity."
So watch this space; next episode: Thistlegorm, Dive 32/33, the date 30 July 2007.
