Maldives | Emperor Leo Trip Report | 11 – 18 May
Report by Bernie McAteer

Emperor Leo guests arrived to a boat with space for everyone and, as we enter low season, nine guests took full  advantage of the extra space.

The first day began with a check dive in North Male before crossing to North Ari for two dives on Maaya Thila in the afternoon. The sunset dive was amazing; the guides agreed it was one of the best dives they had done there with grey reef sharks circling, the fusiliers schooling everywhere and the trevallies chasing after the big schools of silversides that completely covered the pinnacle. Emperor Leo was moored in Maaya lagoon and as light faded we kept our fingers crossed for a manta in the lights at the back of the boat, we were not disappointed and a small manta appeared feeding in the boat lights. Divers descended to watch the beautiful creature barrel-rolling to feed on the plankton. Giovanna and Krystal also had time to complete their PADI Enriched air course as the evening drew to a close!

The wind picked up on the second day but it was still enough for a manta dive and the always relaxing Dhiga Thila before a brief BBQ beach run. Rain cut short the visit but everyone still enjoyed the delicious dinner on board and Polka and Chinmay invited us all to celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary. Congratulations!

The following morning wind and rain restricted us to the Dangheti area, which is by far the best place to be, and two dives kept the atmosphere on board buzzing. The weather broke in the morning and we made four dives on the best sites that Ari Atoll can offer. The highlight of the day was a whale shark!

Last day of the trip and we moved again. We delayed the morning dive to increase the chance for some mantas and had 'Mantanado' on Mahibadhoo Gaa; 10 mantas circling the cleaning station was a truly wonderful way to finish the trip. We did not allow the wind and rain to dampen our spirits and ended on a real high after experiencing some of the best dives of the season.
