Read it here first - extract from Sport Divers' Marsa Alam report

Emperor Divers' is privy to a fascinating insight by Lawson Wood reporting on Marsa Alam, 25 years on, for July's issue of Sport Diver magazine...and see below for savings on subscriptions, only with Emperor Divers.

Here are a couple of short extracts from Lawson's report to whet your appetite.

The southern resort of Marsa Alam is growing increasingly popular, but Lawson Wood remembers this part of Egypt from back in the mid-1980s. What would he make of the changes?

"I suppose I should start with one of those 'When I were a lad...' or 'In my day, when I first dived there...'. However, memory is a rather fickle thing, so I got out the old logbooks and found a scant listing for Elphinstone Reef 'Not as good as the Brothers; no sharks'. I have been reading rave reviews recently about this offshore reef - perhaps it had improved since my first visit. Hardly inspiring, but this visit to Port Ghalib, located midway between the coastal town of Marsa Alam and Hurghada, was actually rather more inspirational than I could have imagined...

...Port Ghalib itself is a developing marina and hotel complex, with most of the international resorts now in place, as well as smaller and economically priced hotels. Port Ghalib and, in particular, the Marina Lodge at Port Ghalib, is just a ten-minute run from the airport (I have to say that the visa section and passport control were particularly painless and all handled superbly by the Longwood Holidays representative)...

...Our dive guide, Vicky, described the outer coral head as being like a mini Elphinstone, as it is the closest reef to the shore which has a great variety of colourful soft corals. I have to say she was right! This is a great dive around coral heads with vertical walls covered in soft and hard corals, schools of anthias and we even had a white-tip reef shark...absolutely amazing that such a wide variety of rare species could be found in such a small area.

In the 25 years since I last visited these reefs, I was encouraged to say the least. Schools of varied fish are plentiful and with a professional operation such as Emperor Divers, you are not only well looked after, you are also informed, encouraged and befriended. A big thank you to everyone for welcoming me back to my old stomping grounds."

Be sure to read Lawson's full report in July's Sport Diver magazine.
