Nuweiba's Mimic Octopus disappears in a puff of smoke

The very elusive Mimic Octopus has made another magical appearance for Emperor Divers in Nuweiba. At the start of a dive on the House Reef last month, guest, Jenny Johnson, managed to get a couple of quick shots of this little Mimic Octopus before it disappeared with a spurt of ink back to the sanctuary of its hole in the sand (first two pics). A kind of 'now you see me now you don't occasion!'

The Mimics have been here in Nuweiba for many years as this photo from regular visitor to Emperor Divers, Steve Mullooly, taken in 2005 shows (far right).

From 'child to adult'...is this the same Nuweiba Frogfish?

As many visitors to Emperor Divers, Nuweiba, know, this is a great location for regular sightings of the elusive Frogfish. They vary from tiny little finger nail size specimens to the much larger - and thus named - Giant Frogfish.

Frogfish change colour over time to match their surroundings and, not surprisingly, grow larger as they grow older. Underwater photographer and frequent visitor to Emperor Nuweiba, Jan Davies, has sent us four photos from 2005 to 2009 of what he believes to be the same Frogfish showing how it has adapted its colouration over the years with its surroundings.

Are there any Frogfish experts out there who can confirm that this could be the same fish growing older over the years?

Ras Mamlach - clearest-water cracks & weird creatures?

One and a half hours south of Nuweiba, along the coastal track by jeep, lies the remote and beautiful dive site of Ras Mamlach in the Abu Galum National Park. The diving here offers pretty coral gardens and a spectacular wall festooned with black corals dropping into the abyss.

During the surface interval, a short walk along the shore will bring you to another interesting feature of this remote location.

Several years ago an earthquake caused two long and narrow cracks to be formed on the shore running inland. About 2 metres wide and dropping down to around 6 to 8 metres, the water in these cracks is extremely clear and not as salty as the sea probably because it is a mix of seawater and fresh underground water from the nearby mountains of the Sinai.

We have yet to discover if there are any weird creatures living in this newly formed habitat such as the blind shrimps found in similar cracks near to Ras Mohamed. Only time and the intrepidness of the dive guide will tell!

Maria's underwater photo courses prove popular once again

Maria Munn, Ocean Visions, gives a report on her last underwater photo workshops held in Nuweiba and showcases some of her students' work...

"The two week photo workshops in Nuweiba gave even more spectacular results than last years. This time the groups explored the outside sites of Pipelines and Sinkers, which provided some stunning photographic opportunities with the gorgeous pink soft coral overhangs that these sites are so famous for. My wish for a frogfish worked and a gorgeous large one arrived on Day One on the House Reef and by the end of the first week was sitting right on top of the pinnacle, posing for everyone!

As ever, the house reef was teaming with life and everyone during the two weeks couldn't believe how many different subjects they saw including Pgymy Pipe Horses at just three metres in the sea grass. A huge well done to everyone who took part with a special well done to Ambrose Stickney for completing his Deep Dive and passing his Advanced Course and to Alex Cook for passing his Advanced too and seeing a huge green turtle on his Underwater Photography Dive with Noeleen.

These sites are absolutely perfect for learning about different underwater photography techniques using natural light, wide angle and macro techniques as well as video. All future courses will come with an accompanied CD to help course guests get an idea of the wonderful underwater scenery that awaits them."

Nuweiba's tentacles take a turn for the mimic

And so the long arm of the octopus reaches ever further...

Remember we told you about Nuweiba's alternative tentacles on June 10? Well, dive centre manager, Jim Pickup, did. The photo we had turned out NOT to be a mimic octopus but thanks to Jane Morgan, editor of Dive Online, we know that mimic are indeed to be found in Nuweiba as Jane wrote and told us...

"Just read your post re the mimic at Nuweiba.. it certainly does exist.. I have several pictures of it and the marble shrimp.. infact they are also in the June issue of DIVE in an article I wrote on Nuweiba."

Nuweiba's alternative tentacles

There has certainly been some debate about our octopus seen on a night dive here in Nuweiba recently. Because of its shape shifting and behavior I proposed that it may have been a Mimic Octopus, which has been positively identified here in the Gulf of Aqaba previously.

However, eagle-eyed Hilary Elder pointed out that she had taken an actual photo of a mimic octopus when diving with Eco Divers in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, a couple of years ago. Cary Yanny from Eco Divers says that it's not a Mimic Octopus and in fact may be a Starry Night Octopus. What if I throw a White-spotted Octopus (Octopus macropus) into the debate?

Still talking octopus - here is a photo of a more commonly seen Reef Octopus (Octopus cyaneus) taken a few days ago on our house reef in Nuweiba.
