Kermit2 Marsa Alam Aug 2010 sm.jpg

Our newest fishy favourite in Marsa Alam is 'Kermit' the Warty Frogfish. First spotted by our dive guide Sarah, Kermit now resides near a table coral in Marsa Mubarak, meaning you can see stonefish, scorpionfish, crocodilefish and a frogfish on one dive!

Over the past two months he has grown from about 5 cm to nearly 10 cm...although being a warty he won't get much bigger!

Emperor Divers' is privy to a fascinating insight by Lawson Wood reporting on Marsa Alam, 25 years on, for July's issue of Sport Diver magazine...and see here for savings on subscriptions, only with Emperor Divers.

Here are a couple of short extracts from Lawson's report to whet your appetite.

0110 marsal alam eagle ray sm.jpgThe southern resort of Marsa Alam is growing increasingly popular, but Lawson Wood remembers this part of Egypt from back in the mid-1980s. What would he make of the changes?

"I suppose I should start with one of those 'When I were a lad...' or 'In my day, when I first dived there...'. However, memory is a rather fickle thing, so I got out the old logbooks and found a scant listing for Elphinstone Reef - 'Not as good as the Brothers; no sharks'. I have been reading rave reviews recently about this offshore reef - perhaps it had improved since my first visit. Hardly inspiring, but this visit to Port Ghalib, located midway between the coastal town of Marsa Alam and Hurghada, was actually rather more inspirational than I could have imagined...

...Port Ghalib itself is a developing marina and hotel complex, with most of the international resorts now in place, as well as smaller and economically priced hotels. Port Ghalib and, in particular, the Marina Lodge at Port Ghalib, is just a ten-minute run from the airport (I have to say that the visa section and passport control were particularly painless and all handled superbly by the Longwood Holidays representative)...

...Our dive guide, Vicky, described the outer coral head as being like a mini Elphinstone, as it is the closest reef to the shore which has a great variety of colourful soft corals. I have to say she was right! This is a great dive around coral heads with vertical walls covered in soft and hard corals, schools of anthias and we even had a white-tip reef shark...absolutely amazing that such a wide variety of rare species could be found in such a small area.

In the 25 years since I last visited these reefs, I was encouraged to say the least. Schools of varied fish are plentiful and with a professional operation such as Emperor Divers, you are not only well looked after, you are also informed, encouraged and befriended. A big thank you to everyone for welcoming me back to my old stomping grounds."

Be sure to read Lawson's full report in July's Sport Diver magazine.

Bottlenose Dolphin encounter on 8th February 2010
By Sarah Iles, dive guide, Emperor Marsa Alam

Keith McKay 20th Feb dolphin encounter sm.JPGAfter two very nice morning dives, I was a little disappointed when the Captain said we had to move as the wind had changed direction. Due to an unusual south wind we headed to Marsa Mubarak South reef.

We jumped in on a site that I knew had amazing corals and there to greet us were lots of big red snapper and spotted sweetlips.

Suddenly I was aware of a diver getting my attention. I turned to look and above us were five big bottlenose dolphins.

They came down to inspect us, swimming very close. They surfaced for air and then came back, playing around us before disappearing off into the blue.  Of course we were all elated, but it was time to turn back.

Swimming over a stunning hard coral garden we were still totally enjoying our encounter, when they came back! This time they started mimicking us swimming and coming even closer, right up to us as we made our way to the boat. WOW!  An incredible experience, made even better by a guest who was an instructor with over 2500 dives coming to me with tears in his eyes, saying he had never had a better dive.

Just goes to show that when you think that moving dive sites is a bad decision, surprises can happen and make your day.

New 'Palace Housereef' for Marsa Alam

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

0210 ma vanessa tom bauer palace housereef.jpgThe first official Palace Housereef dive took place recently. Now guests are just one giant stride away from one of the most amazing reefs in the area. Hawksbill turtles, barracudas and lionfish are seen on a regular basis.

Marsa Alam Dive Centre Manager, Vanessa Ronecker and Tom Bauer, Area General Manager for InterContinental Hotels in Port Ghalib, are pictured preparing for the giant leap!

Following his first diving experience, Tom decided to start his open water course straight away. During their dive they were accompanied by a little hawksbill turtle, lionfish and loads of anthias. Guests can choose morning or afternoon dives and even really early morning and night dives!

Guests with Emperor Marsa Alam recently spotted a pod of dolphins in the bay at Marsa Shoni Kebeir. Snorkelling gear was donned quickly and the group enjoyed the privilege of being accepted by the dolphins for a while. But the adventure was to get even better as later, during their dive, they met a huge eagle ray leisurely passing by. All agreed, it was a magical day!

0110 marsal alam eagle ray sm.jpgThen just the next day, the Zaher family from Switzerland went out on the speedboat for a one-tank dive in Marsa Mubarak. On their way out of the marina they spotted eight bottlenose dolphins and actually went snorkelling with them. What a fabulous family experience! Wait for it...on their dive in Marsa Mubarak south they found two eagle rays passing them on a sandy spot! Yet another magical Marsa day.
