Kevin Prosser's chuffed with Sharm

Please pass on my thanks to all involved at Emperor Divers for making my stay a really enjoyable experience in Sharm. I have returned to diving after a 23 year break and the BSAC ocean diver course was just the ticket to bring me back up to speed with latest equipment and best practice. I really, really enjoyed the reef and hard boat diving and the whole service from all involved was a fantastic experience.

My special thanks to my instructor Mat Cotton who was very thorough and professional in his approach. I have had experience of various instructors over the years and Mat certainly stepped up to the plate. Suffice to say, if my daughter wished to learn to dive I would recommend she attends Emperor Divers.

I will be looking to return in the spring to complete the BSAC sport diver course (ideally with Mat or Pete) and hopefully thereafter enjoy some additional non-course diving. I have joined the local Chester BSAC branch and will wholeheartedly recommend Emperor Divers to all concerned for both courses and holiday diving in the Red Sea.

In October and the beginning of November Emperor Divers Sharm El Sheikh had four instructors that crossed over to BSAC Dive Leader in order to take part in the BSAC Advanced Diver course that took place from 17 - 25 November on Emperor Asmaa, one of our fleet boats.

Emperor Divers' Marsa Alam instructor, David Armstrong, proudly presents Peter Beverley with his brand new cavern diver certificate. Having done his Cavern Diver Course, Peter was immensely impressed with the caverns and enjoyed the adventure of his dives into a new underwater area of the Red Sea.

The cavern diver course is available to anyone with at least Advanced Open Water and aged 18 years or more. You can do the course over two or three days. The cavern system is reachable by day boat and speedboat.

New BSAC Underwater Photography Course

The new BSAC Underwater Photography Course is now available and is designed to appeal to divers who have no previous experience of using a camera underwater, or even on land, whilst equally providing useful information for anyone wanting to improve and develop their techniques.

The course consists of half a day of theory with visual aids and comprehensive Instructor Notes followed by a dry practical session and underwater practical sessions, which can be conducted in a pool or sheltered water location.

The course concludes with a dry session to review the photographic results.

Duration of the underwater practical will depend on the numbers involved and the location.

Marsa Alam goes underground...well Sea Caverns anyway!

After many months of research, mapping and some very long dives by the Marsa Alam Emperor technical dive team, stage one mapping of the caverns means you can now do the PADI Cavern Specialty. For many years guides have known there were some caverns in the area and had guided a few highly experienced divers into them on occasion. Eventually, dive guide, Mo, finally found them again and started to draw a map of the entrance area duly named Mo's Cavern (The Simpsons' Mo's Tavern...get it?) in honor of its founder!

Emperor's technical dive team finished putting the final pieces to this puzzle and have so far mapped and permanently lined over 130 metres of cavern with some still to do!

Aaron Bruce of Emperor's technical wing, Tekstreme, said, "These caverns are beautiful and are a unique feature for the Ghalib area but divers need to be very well trained in the techniques to enter them and enjoy a part of the Red Sea only seen by a hand full of divers."

As luck would have it Emperor Divers has its own PADI Cavern Instructor and Cavern trained guides so now you can learn new diving skills and go on to enjoy the caverns with your guide the next time you are at Marsa Alam.

New liveaboard 5-day film and edit course

Jeff Goodman, director and award-winning cameraman, is to lead a new series of courses aimed at improving the art of good underwater video production while at the same time realising the incredible wealth and diversity of our planet's marine life.

These new courses are being pioneered by Emperor Divers on Gold Fleet luxury liveaboards in May and November 2009. A maximum of 10 guests will be able to learn from one of the best underwater cameramen in the industry and will need their own video camera and housing for filming and a laptop with associated equipment for editing.

"This is ideal for divers who are competent in the water and have good background knowledge of how their camera works. We'll be looking at how to get the best out of their camera systems and exploring the techniques of observing and capturing wildlife behaviour with an end goal of producing a professional looking two-minute DVD," explains Jeff.

"My name is Hannah, I am 17 years old and currently attending a sixth form college in Cambridge. This summer I decided to do something different compared to my friends and travelled to Egypt to get some experience in the diving industry as I had decided a year ago that I wanted to become a diving instructor. I had completed my Open Water course two and a half years ago with Emperor Divers and I really trusted the company, that's why I decided to get the experience with them.

Not only was I going to experience a new adventure into the diving industry, but it was also my first time of travelling alone - a very exciting time for me. Before I travelled I worried about everything as I wanted to be prepared for the next six weeks. I got every drug in the chemist and packed all the clothes I could possibly fit in to my suitcase which was not so beneficial at the airport as I was on my own carrying everything!

From Recreational to Technical Diver in five days

Last month my girlfriend Susi and I finally took the step from recreational diving to technical diving. As Emperor Diver Instructors we obviously did this through Tekstreme (the technical wing of Emperor). The courses we were to be doing were TDI Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures.

These courses increase your Nitrox knowledge and teach you how to use Decompression Procedures - for these purposes you learn to dive in a wing, back plate and twinsets. Then just as you think you're almost getting to grips with that lot, they throw a sling at you just to help you with your 'Dolphiness' dive style. You spend the first couple of days finding your way around the equipment, which involves trying to make the correct hand do the correct thing at the correct time! Trust me, it sounds easy, it even makes sense, but could I get it to work under the water?

BSAC course 'first' at Emperor Divers Sharm

It turned out to be a holiday of 'firsts' for Simon Berry with his first trip to Sharm and the first guest to complete the BSAC Ocean Diver course. Simon's partner, Amelia Charles is a BSAC instructor and gave Emperor BSAC Instructor, Steve Kehoe, some valuable assistance. Steve was very impressed with Simon's enthusiasm during the course, "Every time we did a sheltered lesson or open water session Simon improved and his confidence grew enormously."

Successful PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC)

Gareth and Anders have a lot to smile about as they earn their PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor qualifications this week. Not only can they teach the core PADI courses, but having completed their Master Scuba Diver Trainer and Emergency First Response Instructor programs, they can also teach five PADI specialty courses and First Aid. Their two-day exam, conducted by PADI examiners who were flown in especially, was the culmination of a nine-day intensive but enjoyable learning experience.

Emperor Divers' April PADI IDC got off to a relaxed start on the beach at Shark's Bay in Sharm El Sheikh. Gareth booked in for a two-day prep course with PADI Course Director, Steve Prior, to ensure that his in-water skills and diving knowledge were up to scratch. Gareth advised, "You only do a PADI IDC once in your life, so you want to do it right and you want to have fun."
