"Back in 2003, as a PADI Course Director and owner of New Zealand Sea Adventures, Kaikoura, south of Christchurch and a PADI Gold Palm Instructor Development Centre, I had reservations about accepting children of this age onto an entry level course. That was until Amy and her dad walked in the door and asked to learn to dive. I accepted Amy and her dad onto the PADI Junior/Open Water Diver course but only after outlining the restrictions on a 10/11-year-old with a Junior Open Water qualification and the challenges that Amy would have to meet during and after training. The next IDC in Nuweiba is scheduled for 26th November with a two day preparation course, EFR Instructor on 28th November, with the IDC running from 29th November-8th December. The Instructor Examination conducted by independent PADI staff will be held in Dahab on 9th + 10th December, followed by Master Scuba Diver Trainer preparatory course back in Nuweiba on 11th December.

In May my girlfriend Agnes and I took the PADI Dugong Appreciation Distinctive Speciality Course at Emperor Divers in Port Ghalib. In the morning we had the theoretical part of the course in which we learned a lot about the dugong species; about how best to search for it, about how to approach it when you find it and about the data gathering of dugong sightings by Emperor Divers. It was a nice informal session and you could tell our instructor Luke really enjoyed showing the presentation.

After the theory-session we had two dives at Marsa Mubarak in which we put what we learned into practice. We searched on the surface with the speedboat for the Dugong but we were not able to find it at first. During the two dives we saw a lot of turtles on which we practiced approaching big marine life in a sensitive way. It was really great to be able to get so close to a turtle without scaring it away!

Two years ago Joran, with his father Mattijn as buddy, did his Open Water Course in Cairns Australia and got hooked on diving. Joran was then lucky enough to receive Advanced Open Water training from Mohammed Hashem at Emperor Hurghada who has a gift for teaching junior divers.

I must mention the incredibly patient and calming way Mariann was throughout the course. From the paperwork to the final dive, she made sure every last detail was explained in advance and that I understood everything before we undertook any activities. I was most impressed at how clear and calming she was under the surface.

I had a FEAR of removing my mask in the sea. Just the simplicity of her demonstration and her relaxed nature made me able to complete this no problem.

I'm already planning to return next year and will definitely be taking another course with Emperor!
